One person who affects Pip’s learning is Herbert Pocket. “Herbert Pocket had a frank and easy way with him that was very talking. I had never seen anyone then, and I have never seen anyone since, who more strongly expressed to me, in every look and tone, and a natural incapacity to do anything secret and mean.” (pg. 222) The quote shows that Herbert is a kind fellow who would never do anything to harm Pip. Herbert becomes a friend to Pip, who Pip confides with. To repay for Herbert’s kindness and friendship, Pip becomes a benefactor to Herbert. “…the thing being done, and he having that day entered Clarriker’s House, and he having talked to me for a whole evening in a flush of pleasure and success, I did really cry good earnest when I went to bed, to think that my expectations had done some good to somebody. “ (pg. 378) Becoming Herbert’s benefactor is one of the beginning acts of kindness Pip does after he becomes a gentlemen. Herbert teaches Pip that friendship is very dear and meaningful. Herbert also helps Pip develop compassion and sympathy. Pip could have used his money to pay off his debts. But chooses to help Herbert.
Another person who has influences Pip is Abel Magwitch. In chapter 39, Pip’s convict returns and he learns that Magwitch is his benefactor. “I’ve made a gentleman on you! It’s me wot has done it! I swore that time, sure as ever I earned a guinea, that guinea should go to you.” (pg 403) Magwitch is moved by Pip’s kindness when Pip was younger. Magwitch
