Many people pair the word “science” with the word “fact” and “religion” with “faith”, but those pairs are not indefinite. The world knows scientific fact, but not many know the facts of faith and God; however, many scientists would say that faith goes along with science. Nobel Prize winner Harold Urey once said, “All of us who study the origin of life find that the more we look into it, the more we feel it is too complex to have evolved anywhere. We all believe as an article of faith that life evolved from dead matter on this planet” (Blanchard, 78). Although he does not say anything about God Himself, he does include the factor of faith in science. Many scientists and atheists say they base everything off fact, but all beliefs must have faith. In all reality, scientists base many beliefs solely off of their assumptions. They assume the reality and integrity of their own existence (Blanchard, 79). One scientist named Rene Descartes became one of the fathers of rationalism simply by stating “I think, therefore I am” (Blanchard, 79). By using his doubts, he assumed that he was a living, human being. Another assumption of scientists would be that “the universe exists as an objective, independent reality outside of them” (Blanchard, 79). Scientists also assume that nature is uniform rather than a chaotic mess. They assume that the minuscule amount of life and time that humans have studied is a natural behavior of the universe. Scientists study and keep track of all that happens and believe that it is what will happen from now on. However, scientists can only assume that that is the case. Furthermore, scientists assume that the five senses allow them to accurately capture data about nature and communicate that with the rest of the world. Scientists think that they are somehow communicating with nature and that what they sense is only true. Along with the other four assumptions, the fifth assumption is the law of cause and effect. Because one thing happens, something will be affected. This must be a reason for this madness. Lastly scientists assume that the things we can see provide clues for the things we cannot see. Scientist Del Ratzsch provides a wonderful example: “We cannot directly see atoms and other such micro-entities, yet most scientists are confident of their existence on the basis of large-scale things that human eyes can see – cloud-chamber tracks and so forth” (Blanchard, 81). Those six assumptions are proof that science is without faith.
In conclusion, the existence of God is based on faith as well as fact. For the people who need fact and actual proof, there is some, but it is mostly faith that one has to rely on. There are many things people do not know, but the fact of the matter is that God is a real, live, natural being that we as His children can count on and believe
