Career Research Paper Rough Draft "The baby boomers will soon add 75 million people to the already vast elderly population, [and]...it would be self-destructive for our society not to nurture the growth of geriatrics [with only] about 45 percent of positions [that] are filled" (Libow). There are millions of elders whom need care from a patient, and caring geriatrician. There will always be a need for geriatricians, since there are always people. Not only are they always going to be needed, says Barberotta, "the US will need an additional 3.5 million geriatricians to support the new elderly.” As society and people change and grow, geriatricians will help and care for more elderly, and be with them in their few, and sometimes tragic, final years. Geriatricians are the "most satisfied among physician specialties"(Barberotta), and are paid well doing what they love. Geriatrics are "intellectually demanding [, yet an] exciting nature of the field” (Libow). The geriatric force needs "knowledgeable, skilled, competent professionals to care for people with complex chronic conditions" (Libow). Geriatricians need traits such as “dexterity, communication skills, empathy, leadership skills, and be detail orientated” (Physicians and Surgeons). Because the new wave of geriatricians will soon utilize more advanced technology to help improve their work, geriatricians will deliver positive affects for society by providing care for the elderly, innovating new ways of delivering better results, improve the lives of the old with intense care, faster and easier ways of treatment, and patient happiness.
While making a huge impact on elder’s lives and their health, this geriatric assistance comes at a cost, high enough to where some cannot pay, some forced to bankruptcy. Some critics, mainly physicians and geriatricians, have come to notice that some elders are not able to pay for their medical needs. Laura D’ Andrea Tyson, an American economist and former Chair of the US President Council of Economic advisers, has come to find that “fifty percent of the elderly had no to little insurance at all” (Tyson). Even though there are programs to help with this, programs like “Medicare covers only about fifty percent of total health care spending by the elderly” (Tyson). More and more elderly are not getting the proper medical insurance they need; therefore they are not getting the proper treatment they require. More and more people are becoming elderly, many without family or friends, and they cannot support themselves. Without proper medical insurance “those needing nursing homes or other extensive continuous care, the cost can be substantial” (G.A.D.R.). Families take huge impacts from supporting the ones that they care most dearly about. Some of the elders that need care need “their families [pay] for almost twenty five percent” (G.A.D.R.). This creates an even bigger problem, not only for the elder getting the support, but for the family that is supporting them. With families paying this much out of their pocket, they barely have enough to support themselves. This issue will have a greater impact on larger families, due to the amount of people they have to support. Even with these programs that try to help aid with the financial issues, they are not doing enough because more and more families are being forced into bankruptcy from supporting the people in their
[pic] By Reginald J. Eadie, MD Nicole Poyntz: Dr. Eadie, I recently visited my 78 year-old aunt and was troubled by her behavior. She has been a fairly healthy and independent woman ever since my uncle died 3 years ago. When my husband and I arrived at her home, we noticed that she had her shoes on the wrong feet. She seemed to be having problems with her memory and had us looking for a book that we think never existed. As I spoke to her trying to make sense out of what I was witnessing…
Patients living longer with HIV are more likely to develop diseases associated with aging, and at an earlier age, than those without HIV. These include coronary artery disease, dyslipidemia, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, osteoporosis, and dementia. Geriatricians and primary care providers are increasingly responsible for managing these complex issues (ncbi.gov) Survival rates among elderly individuals infected with human…
Elder Abuse: Acknowledging an Epidemic Lajuana Johnson Knowledge and wisdom are granted through those whom surpassed the trials and tribulations, while preserving the integrity of our history. The elders that are being preserved should have the best care and nurture provided. When there are issues that rise of our elders being abused, action and protocol should be handled accordingly. Statistics show that Thirteen percent of our population are elders and that abuse among them are mass…
investigations however assessments and background information is vital and family medical history helps. The individual may be referred to a specialist in the area that covers the particular problems. These may be neurologists or psychiatrists or even geriatricians. Assessments usually take place in the home but can be at the hospital outpatients department. The assessments consist of monitoring behaviours, analysis of background history, physical examinations, memory tests or scans. 2.2 Explain the…

Primary care physicians consist of family physicians and general practitioners, general internists, general pediatricians, and geriatricians. Of the nearly 956 million visits that Americans made to office-based physicians in 2008, 51.3% were to primary care physicians (Center for Health Statistics, 2010). Editorial Last week’s UK newspapers saw further evidence of lobbying by industry against a ban on smoking in public places. Gareth Davis, chief executive of Imperial Tobacco, said that a ban would not harm tobacco sales in the long term, but would harm the hospitality industry. But evidence from Ireland, which introduced a ban on smoking in public places earlier this year, shows that cigarette sales are down. Meanwhile, a systematic review of research on the impact of bans on bar and…
It has been well documented that the ageing population is on the increase in Australia and due to these predictions so too is the demand on the acute care setting (Australia Institute of Health and Welfare [AIHW], 2007). Dementia is described as a "syndrome, usually of a chronic or progressive nature, caused by a variety of brain illnesses that affect memory, behaviour and ability to perform everyday activities" (World Health Organization [WHO], 2012, p.2). Purpose: The purpose of this literature…

five-year, 10 percent increase in Medicare payments for primary care services. The law defines these services as office and other ambulatory visits furnished by primary care physicians (PCPs)—including family practice physicians, general internists, geriatricians, and pediatricians—as well as nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, and physician assistants. For practitioners to qualify for these higher payments, at least 60 percent of their Medicare-allowed charges in a prior period must be for…
