The characteristics that appeal most to me are learning and service, for a variety of reasons. Learning, for obvious reasons, is one of the most important essentials for everyday life; without it, we wouldn’t have the simple things in life that we take for granted everyday such as electricity and fresh running water. Service also appeals to me in a major way simply because I love serving others around me. It’s almost unbelievable how something entirely simple can completely change someone’s day.
Socrates once said “The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing.” I find this quote to be very valid and inspiring because no matter how much we learn there is always still more to learn. Growing up I often heard, “the more you know the more you realize how much you don’t know,” When I hear this I realize how much there is to learn out in the world. Taking AP biology last year, I learned a seemingly innumerable amount of concepts about highly precise and meticulous functions in the human body. Countless times I was truly in awe of the all the things that occur in our bodies on a daily basis. Learning mass quantities of information such as this gives me a hunger to learn and accomplish more on a daily basis.
Another quote I really admire is “No one has ever become poor by giving” by Anne Frank. This quote holds my appreciation because when many people think about giving to others, they typically think about what they are “losing” instead of what they are genuinely gaining. In contrast to this popular thinking, I have always found that doing things to aide those in need is mutually beneficial, even though I am not physically receiving anything in return. Over the summer for the past few years, I’ve helped my church feed homeless people several times, and I always enjoy serving so much
