From Self-Reliance
There is a time in every man’s education when he realizes that it is foolish to envy others and that imitation is suicide. He understands that he must accept himself exactly as he is. He sees that, although the wide universe is full of good, he will not receive one kernel of nourishing corn unless he tills the plot of ground given to him. The power in each man is unique, and only he knows what he can do.
Each sees the world differently, and each remembers in his own special way. Each man must express his own individuality. We only half express ourselves, and are ashamed of that divine idea which each of us represents. A man is happy when he has put his heart and soul into his work and done his best. If he speaks or acts otherwise, he has no peace. His genius deserts him, and he has no new ideas, no hope.

Trust yourself. Every heart vibrates to that iron string. Accept the place God has found for you. Accept your companions and the events of your life. The great have always done so, trusting the feelings of their hearts and the work of their hands. We must all accept this destiny and not hide in some corner like children, invalids, or cowards. We must do good, obey the will of God, and advance on
Chaos and the Dark. . . .
These are the voices we hear in solitude, but they become weak as we enter into the world. Society discourages the manhood of every one of its members. It is like a joint-stock company. The members of society agree to surrender their freedom and individuality in exchange for security. They try to conform, to be the same. Self-reliance is not popular, because conformity does not love truth and creativity.
Anyone who wants to be a strong individual must be a nonconformist. That is, he must not blindly accept society’s beliefs and customs. He who wishes to be great must discover for himself what goodness means and not be held back by society’s constraints.
Nothing is more sacred than the integrity of your own mind. Be true to yourself, and the world will applaud you. . . .

A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds. A great soul has simply nothing to do with consistency. He may just as well concern himself with his shadow on the wall. Speak clearly what you think today, and speak your truth tomorrow, even if it is different from today’s. You may be misunderstood, but is it so bad to be misunderstood? Pythagoras was misunderstood, and Socrates, and
Jesus, and Luther, and Copernicus, and Galileo, and Newton, ° and every pure and wise spirit. To be great is to be misunderstood. .
