I was extremely confused throughout the entire happenings of Franny’s story in Franny and Zooey by J.D. Salinger. First, the letter that Franny sent to her boyfriend, Lane Coutell, expresses her love, but mostly she was talking about the background noises that distracted her thoughts. Franny says that she had to strain when she was writing the letter. It feels like the phrase “I love you” that she wrote over and over is not what she really wants to say. When Franny and Lane went to Sickler’s, a fancy restaurant, Franny only orders a plain chicken sandwich. Franny says that she is not hungry when Lane questioned her. It is confusing when she says that she is not hungry, but she still orders a chicken sandwich. When Lane says that Manlius and Esposito, two guys who are in the English department, are poets, Franny disagreed. Franny argues that they are not poets. However, when Lane did not stop the conversation about poets, Franny says that she did not know what a real poet is. I feel that Franny does not know what she is talking about and is contradicting. After this conversation about poets, Franny went to the ladies’ room and cried. This was confusing because I do not understand why she had to cry. When she saw the green book in her bag, she stopped crying and held the book against her chest.
