Specific Purpose: To persuade my audience that Bandura`s theory is the best learning theory.
Thesis: Learning theories explain that we often copy the behavior of those around us. The self, therefore, is partly defined by who we spend time with and what we see them do.
I. Introduction.
a. Attention Getter: Do you remember your childhood?. Do you remember how hard were the homework when we were in 1st grade? Painting, learning how to write your name or talk. It is funny right now because you might think that it is so easy but it is not or it was not when you were a child.
b. Reason to listen: today exist many learning theories but I am going to explain why Bandura’s theory is helpful in training teachers, and can be easily applied to students learn, why students do not learn, and how to get students to learn best.
c. Thesis statement: Learning theories explain that we often copy the behaviors of those around us. The self, therefore, is partly defined by who we spend time with and what we see the do.
d. Credibility statement: I have read the iBook chapter 3 of Bandura’s learning theory and analyzed it very carefully.
e. Preview of Main Points:
1. First, I will discuss about what is the theory.
2. Second, I will discuss about 3 articles regarding Bandura’s theory, the first is social learning theory and the other 2 are about self-efficacy and modeling.
3. Third, I will conclude the speech.
II. Content.
1. What is the theory of Bandura, what is his belief?
Bandura believes, and his theory posits, that the world and a person’s behavior cause one another- he has termed this reciprocal determinism (Boeree, 2006) What is reciprocal determinism?
Pertains to the idea that their thoughts and beliefs and their environment influence people.
Example:
Consider you are 6 year old and your mom asks you to clean your room. A 6-year-old person cannot do it right, when moms comes and check the room, enthusiastically says “Good Job” the effect on the child is that he or she will feel happy that mom reacted this way. 2. Self-esteem is considered a constant construct, while self-efficacy changes, depending on the nature of the task and previous experiences.
Example: A Kid has generally high self- esteem, but a very low sense of self-efficacy in the bike- riding task. For example, when learning to ride a scooter, did he fall off and break his arm? Does his mother constantly tell him he is going to hurt himself while he was trying to learn to ride his bike? This is how reciprocal determinism effects self-efficacy. Francis Bacon says “knowledge is power” (Columbia world of quotations) 3. Bandura’s theory lends itself to setting goals and to bring successful in meeting those goals. This is relevant to all aspects of human life. Examples of this include creating a plan to: Save money to buy a car or a house. Earn all A’s and B’s is college. Keep in touch with out of state friends.
Understanding Bandura’s theory and applying it to your life can have significant positive effects now and in your future.
Now that I talked about what is the theory about I will talk about three articles regarding to Bandura’s theory.
Social Learning Theory:
He called the phenomenon observational learning or modeling, and his theory is usually called Social Learning Theory.
All these variations allowed Bandura to establish that there were certain steps involved in modeling process:
1. Attention: if you are going to learn anything, you have to be paying attention.
For example: there are things that increase or decrease the attention for example if the model is colorful we pay more attention or if we are sick, nervous or hyper you will learn less well.
2. Retention: Second, you must be able to retain- remember.
