There are many different types of forces. A force, according to our text book, is an influence tending to change the motion of an object or produce motion in a stationary object. Forces have a variety of different functions, in which they can combine. They combine by either working in the same direction to make a stronger force, or by working against each-other to cancel out one of the forces. According to our text book, how forces combine depends on the direction of the forces applied to an object. Some commonly known forces are balanced and non-balanced forces. Balanced forces are forces that have a net force of zero, and un-balanced forces have a net force that isn’t zero. These forces have the ability to affect motion. They do this by using the force of pushing or pulling to move an object, changing its motion, making it move in a certain direction. An example of this is if someone was to push on the right side of a desk with a net force of 25 while another person is pushing on the left side of the desk with a net force of 5, the desk would move to the left since the higher force on the right over powers the lower net force on the left. The force due to gravity depends on mass and distance because according to our text book, “The gravitational force becomes stronger as the mass of one of the objects increases and the force becomes weaker as the distance between the objects increase.” Two types of frictional forces are static frictional force and sliding frictional force. Static frictional force is the friction between an object and a surface when the object is not moving, and sliding frictional force is the friction between a surface and an object that is sliding against each-other. Elastic force, according to my text book, is force exerted by a material when it is stretched or compressed. A bungee cord is an example of an elastic force, the force exerted by bungee cord, when someone pulls down in it, is an example of a tension force. A tension force, according to my text book, is a pulling force applied to an object that can make the object stretch. The bungee cord when it bounces back is an example of a compression force. A compression force, according to my text book, is squeezing forces applied to an object that can make an object shrink. Another example of these forces acting upon each-other is a rubber band.
