Food Nannies I believe that the government should not have a say in or control what the American public can or should consume. On this topic I agree with Stossel, in the fact that I believe the consumer should decide what he or she decides to put in their body. The fact that the government is trying to control what people choose to do their own bodies is outrageous.
In the United States the Constitution clearly states the freedom that American Citizen’s receive in the First Amendment in the Bill of Rights, it says “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” So why should the US government control what we put into our own bodies? By proposing to add taxes on fattier foods is against the constitution and the first amendment. This tax was tried in Denmark, but was only there for a year because it obviously does not work. And if this were to happen, people would just find ways around it, like what happened in Denmark when there was a fat tax for a year until it was repealed. The governor of New York is trying to pass a limit on the size of soda cups that can be purchased. This just seems ridiculous because people could just buy two smaller ones or find some other easy way around it. To higher the price on unhealthy food is not only unconstitutional, but also extreme.
The opposing side of the argument is that the government is actually trying to help the American population. The government’s logic for increasing the prices of fatty foods is the make the obesity in the United States go down. They argue that to make a change in America’s battle with obesity that someone higher
