The 1994 Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act made it possible for herbal medications to be advertised and sold without FDA regulation as long as the product is not specifically represented as a treatment for a disease.
What are some benefits of this decision?
What are some drawbacks of this decision? According to the chapter, as previously mentioned the 1994 Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act paved the way for herbal medications to be advertised and sold without FDA regulation. There pros and cons were mentioned as the sub- heading went into more depth. Some of the pro’s included but were not limited to being obtained directly from natural resources, they are somehow safer and more in harmony with nature than other medicines (Tyler,2000). In addition, “supporters of the 1994 act argue that valuable remedies are now more readily available to people at low prices. This act is linked to the success story of St. John’s wart (hypericum) lastly, these remedies tend to be an herbal therapy for depression.
On the contrary, abuse problems are associated more so often with medications that are Over the Counter versus those that you have to have a medical prescription for.
