“A Good Man Is Hard To Find” by Flannery O’Connor
When we think about what a family consist of, we would think of love, affection and respect. In Flannery O’Connor’s A Good Man Is Hard to Find, June Star and her family portray the exact opposite. This story is about a family traveling to Florida for a vacation, although the grandmother would much rather go to Tennessee. While on their way they run into the Misfit and ultimately find death. June Star is one of the side characters that many readers may not notice but she portrays a modern-day version of the grandmother. June Star is very selfish and this is shown through her treatment towards her family and others. She is very outspoken and wants her opinion to be heard. During this time period many children were taught to be respectful towards their elders, but June Star is a rebel.
As a young child, many people loved spending time with their grandparents. June Star is the exact opposite. June Star thinks her grandmother is annoying, she says, “She wouldn’t stay at home for a million bucks. Afraid she’d miss something. She has to go everywhere we go (O’Connor, 7). June Star probably would love to not have her grandmother around. She shows very little affection towards her grandmother.
June Star has no fear in letting everyone know what she thinks.
