For me personally, there are many things that aid me in deciding what movie to watch. I would say, as I believe most would, the first choice I make is the genre (type) of movie I want to watch. Action, Suspense, Sci-Fi, etc. Once this is decided, the next thing I look at are the actors and actresses that are in the film. Are they known to me or are they newer people that I know little or nothing about. At this point, I would look at the story. Just because there are well known actors in the film, does not mean that it is going to be a good one. Once all of these questions have been answered, I make my final decision. Even though I have this "system" to aid me in making my decision to watch a film, there have been times this "system" has failed me. Nothing is perfect.
In my opinion, one of the greatest points that make a movie entertaining is the visual art involved in the movie. If the movies are visually entertaining, it is going to be able to keep my attention. I am one that enjoys the aesthetics of a film production. The visual effects, the time, skill, knowledge, expertise that it takes to create the visual pleasures that one enjoys in movies is a topic of great importance to me. Some of the movies I am describing are “Transformers”, “Battleship”, “Superman”, “Resident Evil”, “Twilight”, etc.
Another area of enjoyment for me would be the overall theme of the movie. I enjoy stories like “We Were Soldiers”, “Full Metal Jacket”, “Superman”, Smallville (TV)”, “Tears of the Sun”, etc. Human and personal struggle make for great entertainment.
