What More Do Women Want Women have come very far in this country. Feminism refers to movements aimed at establishing and defending equal political, economic, and social rights and equal opportunities for women. Women have been fighting for their rights for a very long time. The result, law for the right of women to vote, laws against sexism, three women currently on the United States Supreme Court, and more. However women are still fighting along with some men. My question is, why? What more do women want? Women traditionally had been regarded as inferior to men physically and intellectually. Women could not possess property in their own names, engage in business, or control the disposal of their children or even of their own persons. Throughout history a number of women fought for their rights as citizens. It was not until 1848 when the feminists movements really happened. Elizabeth Cady Staton, Lucretia Coffin Mott and others, participated in a women’s convention at Seneca Falls, New York. They issued a declaration of independence for women demanding full legal equality, full education and commercial opportunity, equal compensation, the right to collect wages, and the right to vote. The movement spread rapidly and soon extended to Europe. In 1946, the UN Commission of the Status of Women was established to secure equal political rights, economic rights and educational opportunities for women throughout the world. National Organization for Women, formed in 1966, had over 400 local chapters by the early 1970s. National Women Political Caucus, and other groups pressed for such changes as abortion rights, federally supported child care centers, equal pay for women, the occupational upgrading of women, the removal of all legal and social barriers to educations, political influence, and economic power for women. In the 1960s the movement begun. Resulted in a large number of women moving into the workplace. 59.8% of civilian women over the age of 16 were working in 1997 compared to 37.7% in 1960. (Columbia Encyclopedia) A good way to look at how far women have come in society is to look at the female culture today. Women’s writing strongly increased throughout the decades. Women’s music is generally composed by females, and lyrics written from experiences and perspectives of women and girls. On film women are included as directors, writers, cinematographers and, of course, actors. Men also play rolls in the feminist society. Some women believe that participating as a feminist is the strongest stand a man can take in the struggle of sexism. While other feminist women argue
