The literature of English 421 shows that fear is the basis of motivation for characters to make risky decisions that are not always seen as wise actions, and ultimately bring out their true personality. The works of Lord of the Flies, Water for Elephants, and Alive convey a wide range of emotions and themes, but the one that stood out to me the most was fear.
Fear in Lord of the Flies is a recurring conflict. When the boys were first united on the island, many of them decided that this was the perfect getaway from adults and responsibilities. Except, what Ralph feared was of never getting off the island. He called for a meeting and implied they should build fires and shelters to sustain themselves in order to stay alive long enough to get rescued. “If a ship comes near the island they may not notice us. So we Jacob was near graduation of veterinary school with the aim to join his father in the business once he received his degree. Unfortunately, his father and mother died, and he was left with nothing. This sparked a breakdown in Jacob’s life. While he was taking his final exam, he walked out without having written anything on the paper. He wandered around town after, lost in his own world, when suddenly a train was rushing alongside him. “There are people on that train. It matters not a whit where it’s going, because wherever it is, it’s away from coyotes and toward civilization, food, possible employment- maybe even a ticket back to Ithaca, although I haven’t a cent to my name and no reason to think they’d take me back.” (Gruen 24). This represents Jacob’s fear of facing the consequences of what he did. He uses that fear to motivate him to grab onto a moving train and join the circus at the age of twenty-three. This introduced his inner depth and innocence, as he still cared about his future while looking for a way

6 June 2012 Guess My Name: A Comparison of Lord of the Flies to Sympathy for the Devil The story The Lord of the Flies is a timeless piece of literature written by William Golding. Many who have read this story have been inspired in different ways, one of these groups being The Rolling Stones. In their song Sympathy for the Devil, there are striking similarities between the lyrics and the content of The Lord of the Flies. In one line of Sympathy for the Devil, the lyrics go like this, “I watched…
eGrant Johnson Per 4 Final Draft0- The Allegory of Life William Golding’s Lord of the Flies repeatedly contrasts with the morality-driven views of the controversial philosopher Frederick Nietzsche. Golding’s allegorical novel tells the story of a group of young boys who remain stranded on an island and left to their own instincts. Golding and Nietzsche would argue the issues the boys face are based on the morality and nature of man. Ralph, the protagonist, is delegated power by the other boys…
Lord of the Flies Symbolism The definition of a symbol is a thing that represents or stands for something else. The symbols in the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding are very deep and meaningful and everyone can learn from them. Lord of the Flies is the story of a group of British boys stranded on an island and it contains a lot of symbolism about people and life in general. Three objects in Lord of the Flies that symbolize something greater than just their functional purpose are the conch shell…

In the Novel “Lord Of The Flies” there is a significant role of the beast, even though there’s no beast. Mostly all the characters have a positive/negative effect of the beast. When the boy with the mulberry mark on is face says about the snake he saw last night and that he thinks it is a beast, most of the characters laugh and make a fun of him making him look silly. But as the story goes on most characters start believing that there is a beast and they grow a constant fear. Actually there’s no…

Connections across texts. Through the texts The Shawshank Redemption directed by Frank Darabont, Lord of The Flies written by William Golding, Jack Reacher directed by Christopher McQuarrie and Anthem for Doomed Youth written by Wilfred Owen, the main theme that is seen extensively throughout these texts is conflict between the powerful and the powerless. This conflict is revealed through internal and external conflict, developed through theme and character. I chose these texts because they all…
Symbolism is a very important factor in many books. The use of symbolism in William Golding’s novel The Lord of the Flies is the most essential aspect to the function of the story. At first glance you may not think the symbols are very important, but with some in-depth thought you can see how it is necessary to explain the microcosm of an island. The conch shell is the opening symbol in the novel and lasts roughly to the very end of the story. The conch is found by Ralph and Piggy, which they use…
