In the novel Farenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury the power of wills is tested throughout each character, revealing something about themselves and their connection to the root of their knowledge. Censorship averts the characters attention from books into media, leaving most of society in this novel clueless about their history and the power of knowledge attained through books. Wisdom, tyranny, and democracy are all combating each other until pandemonium breaks out leaving their community in ruins. The protagonist Montag, who was once an unquestioning, cold hearted conformist, searches for answers and discovers that books may hold the key to his problems. In a world of illiteracy, and where books are banned, there are those who conform to the ways of the government, and those who are propelled by the power of books. “Why should I read? What for?”(Bradbury 73) the answer comes from wisdom that through reading we find knowledge and pleasure. Reading gives us new ideas and ways to express them. Reading gives us new thoughts and improves our wisdom to correct our mistakes. “Maybe the books can get us half out of the cave. They just might stop us from making the same damn insane mistakes” (Bradbury 74) Reading is vital in order to understand our surroundings and our past. Books unlock views and perspectives of brilliant prodigies and keep their thoughts alive by sharing them with us.
