Experimental Research Designs
“A correlational study determines whether or not two variables are correlated. This means to study whether there is an increase or decrease in one variable corresponds to an increase or decrease in the other variable” (Cherry, 2012). In most correlation studies there is a relationship between both variables that had a change, while in others there wasn’t necessarily causation between the two (Cherry, 2012).
An experimental design is one in which the researcher manipulates the independent variable to observe its effect the dependent variable. When conducting an experiment the researcher will use random assignment of the participants into a control group and the other the group that is being experimented on.
Are people with high self-confidence more susceptible to flattery than those with low self-confidence? Hypothesis: Low self-confidence people are more susceptible to flattery than those with high self-confidence. The way I formed this hypothesis was on the basis of certain research and my own personal opinion. I reviewed a piece of literature from Time magazine. My reasoning was chosen because of my own personal experience and the literature that I reviewed. I have found that many people around me with low self-esteem are more susceptible to flattery. They tend to thrive on it and base all their feelings about themselves on how others feel about them. I think this is a terrible way to live. Having no self worth is a problem to those who are susceptible to flattery by those around them. I was this way when I was in high school. I didn’t think very highly of myself and when someone would give me a compliment, it would mean the world to me. My self-esteem was so low, that a compliment made me really happy; while my friend had really high self-esteem would just shrug off a compliment like it was nothing to her. She didn’t care about getting compliments because she knew how good looking she was without people telling her. My conclusion is that people with low self-esteem are more susceptible to flattery.
