Transformational learning is a cycling process that one ensues when recognizing a significant situation. One must clearly identify the situation, analyze and reflect upon it and ultimately, resolve it. The results of this will generate a new perspective and outlook on your life. Our text states, “This process requires a great deal of reflection and is often painful and stressful. Transformation, though desirable, rarely comes easily. It separates life into distinct “before” and “after” realities.” (Clugston & Tice, 2009) The most transformational learning experience in my life was when my birth control failed, and I found out I was pregnant a few weeks after leaving a mentally abusive boyfriend. It was the most difficult decision I ever had to make because while I could welcome a child into my life with open arms, I would not want to raise a child that would be subject to the mind games of its father, and forever tie me into his life. It took a lot of thinking and tears, talking to a peer group and hearing both sides of the coin. I have seen families where one of the parents was non-existent in the child’s life. The resentment of being ‘trapped’ into a relationship by having a child brought nothing but misery to the child’s life with parents constantly fighting. This was the hardest choice I ever had to make, and do not wish it upon anyone.
