According to the gale encyclopedia for mental disorders, deinstitutionalization of the local community affected many people. There were far more people who were diagnosed with mental or, mood disorders and were not able to receive the type of care to help them resolve their illness. There were also suggestions that there should be community health centers to also help people with mental illness get treatment that they were in need of. Furthermore, visible problems of homelessness and disease spread throughout the community as well, according to my article, 30%-50% of the homeless people were mentally ill and the need for care steadily increased. I also found that a lot of the people in the communities did not have proper health care coverage to even go to a regular check up or, health visit. Overall, the affects of deinstitutionalization has changed many local communities such as, high crime rates, homelessness, and the widespread of diseases. Although there are many different issues related to the mental disorders that affect people, I think that in my opinion, with the proper care and interventions of community based help, the challenges of deinstitutionalization can be at a lower level and will regain confidence within the community.

Beginning in 1963 president John F Kennedy started the community mental health care act which helped establish a network of community health centers. With the new form of health care for people with mental health disorders there was a brighter path for people of the community.
