• How is discrimination different from prejudice and stereotyping?

I feel that all of these terms are connected in some way. When we are being prejudice or we are stereotyping we are assuming positive and or negative things about a certain person. We assume this based on their looks, age, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability, religious beliefs or something as simple as the color of their hair or height. When we begin to judge a person on these things and then act in a negative way this is discrimination. Discrimination is used when an employer is interviewing a person and simply does not higher them due to their gender or race. Discrimination is used every day rather it is that we don’t want to be friends with someone due to their religious beliefs or not sitting next to someone on public transportation due to the color of their skin. When we have stereotypes or we are prejudice this is the cause of discrimination which is the effect.

• What are the causes of discrimination?

I feel that the main cause of discrimination is the prejudice opinions and stereotypes that we learn while growing up. When we are children and our parents, friends, and other family show prejudice against an individual or group we begin to take on the same thoughts and actions. We also see others being prejudice and learning stereotypes through television, movies, and music. It is all around us as we grow and adopt the behavior of our surroundings.
