The American Cancer Society’s main focus is to eliminate cancer worldwide. This society was initiated in order to help save lives while creating a world with less cancer. The organization does this by helping people stay well, helping people get well, finding cures, and lastly, by fighting back. (American Cancer Society Inc., 2013) This organization was founded in 1913 by 15 physicians (American Cancer Society Inc., 2013). These physicians acknowledged a need to find a cure because at that time death was the only option. These 15 physicians knew that they must raise public awareness where cancer was concerned. In addition, doctors and nurses needed to be informed as well as the patients that were affected. The American Cancer Society states the following as their mission: “The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service.” (American Cancer Society Inc., 2013).
