Ethics and Social Responsibility
Ethics is the science concerning the right and wrong of human action (Boylan, 2009). As children we are taught by our parents right from wrong, but as adults we have to make decisions to do the right or wrong thing. My personal experience is when I went to Wells Fargo Bank to cash my check. The teller over paid me by fifty dollars. When I realized the teller overpaid me, I return to the bank to give back the fifty dollars, and I knew I was doing the right thing. Morality is the differentiation of intentions, decisions and action between those that are right and wrong.
Virtue in the Greek language is referred to as excellence. The theory is the origin of an individual focusing on good habit and good characteristics. Virtue ethics is also called agent – based or character ethics (Boylan, 2009). A person should always cultivate excellence in everything that they do and do for others. This is a decision that an individual decides to make and is not following any laws or cultures. As an adult I strive to give my best at my job every day. But over the years I have also learned to always give my best as I am doing for others, because I would want them to treat me the same way; this show good ethics and morality.
Utilitarianism is a theory that suggests that an action is morally right when that action produces more total utility for the group than any other alternative (Boylan, 2009). In the Utilitarianism everyone strive to do well as a team or group. While working for United Airlines I work in the technology department. There were eight men and I was the only women in the group. We all worked very hard to get all of our projects done. The goal was to always complete the task on time but to always do our best as a group. The team displayed great work ethic and morality.
Deontology is a moral theory that emphasizes one’s duty to do a particular action just
