How is discrimination different from prejudice and stereotyping?
Discrimination is the denial of opportunities and equal rights to individuals and groups because of prejudice or for other arbitrary reasons. Prejudice is a negative attitude toward an entire category of people, such as a racial or ethnic minority. Stereotyping is a person or a group blamed irrationally for another person’s or group’s problems or difficulties. Discrimination is different between the two because the person has denial over the fact of what they are doing whereas prejudice and stereotyping the person knows the he or she is doing. When you have discrimination toward someone it could be because you have seen that when you were growing up and it could just be natural to you. I think the same if you were stereotyping someone that you may not know that you are doing it that it could come second nature to you. When you are being prejudice toward someone you are very aware of what you are doing but it could be that you grew up with it so maybe it could be second nature to you as well.
What are the causes of discrimination?
Discrimination is caused by how you grew up and whom you surrounded yourself with when you were growing up. I think that as a child your parents are your biggest influences and you wanted to be just like them when you grew up. If your parents discriminated a lot toward anyone no matter their race or religion you are most likely to turn out yourself discriminating against the same group of people. Then when you get older and in school it is whom you surround yourself with then because they could influence you to discriminate against others because of their look or anything else that they may not thing a person should be like.
