ESSENTIAL INFORMATION SYSTEM NEEDED IN PUBLIC SAFETY
Public Safety is essential within our community today. Without this necessity, day to day living would be crippled with crime, and slowed with medical emergencies. There are several information systems used to assist the departments within public safety. However there are three essential systems needed to operate daily. Those information systems are GCIC (Georgia Crime Information System), NCIC (National Criminal Information System), and the Georgia Registration and Tag Integrated System or GRATIS.
The Georgia Crime Information System is a network of departments positioned in one location. This center’s daily function is to analyze, gather and store criminal information committed within the state of Georgia only. This information is essential to each law enforcement agency because it tracks and locates persons who have committed crimes. The system also formats and generates a list of all items stolen or lost in the state. GCIC compiles all warrants both misdemeanor and felony throughout all one hundred fifty two counties within the state.
The National Criminal Information Center or (NCIC) operates in the same way as the state’s center but on the national level. NCIC connects each state with the criminal information complied within that states own counties. NCIC is the hub used by the federal government to identify areas that posses the potential of having terroristic activity. The center also indentifies those states that have and a high concentration of gang activity and high murder rates. These systems work hand in hand by sharing information about people and material items. The Georgia Registration and Tag Integrated System (GRATIS)
