It would be unusual for an Islander to want to leave home and start a new life on the mainland, as trades were passed down from generation to generation as most Islanders were either fishermen or farmers. The point of 'mistrust' is highlight in The Wireless Set when the missionary (who is not from the Island originally) visits Betsey after she has received word of Howie, The missionary says, “..... he died for his country. He made the great sacrifice. So that we could all live in peace”. These are just general words used to comfort, but Betsey is having none of it. “That isn't it at all. Howie's sunk with torpedoes. That's all I know.” She is dismissive of his comforting words, but not as to be outright rude. The missionary is a stranger as far as she is concerned and she does not want to show her emotions in front of a stranger. Matters such as this are for close friends and family ie, the community with whom she was brought up.
A further illustration of life long friendship is demonstrated in Three Old Men. It tells the story of three gentlemen out on a wild snowy night and not quite sure as to why they are there. They chatter along, support each other; physically as well as mentally, and seem quite unperturbed by their hazardous environment. After all they just want to get to the pub!
