Introductions:
Do we need ‘knowledge’ of art to know what art really, truly is? Art is a controversial area of knowledge because there’s no definite criterion for what constitutes “proper art”. For example, to some people anything can be art, which reflects the subjective view of the arts from a personal point of view that allows us to make judgments based on what we think or feel. Art can mean something different to each and every person. However to others, there are strict rules that must be adhered to in order for a piece of work to be considered art, which is the objective view. This looks at the arts based on criteria and the quality of the artwork itself, which would allow us to formulate a judgment independent to the observer, hence the personal knowledge aspect of art. Also we would have to know what the artist is trying to portray through this piece of art in order to truly understand, hence the aspect of shared knowledge.

For instance, it could be interpreted that the person in the painting is just upset not distraught, or it could be that he had forgotten something rather than fear. This is where the shared knowledge aspect comes in; where we would have to understand where the artist was coming from in order to understand the painting. Although there is noting societally related, Edvard Munch tends to depict emotion, which is rather personal, than something such as politics, which is rather
