Chapter 9 Essay
A. Read Executive Order 9066 and imagine what it must have been like for Asian Americans (predominantly Japanese-Americans). Many of those taken to the "camps" were long-time citizens (some multi-generational) and for newer immigrants (with little knowledge of English) do you think they would understand the "order"?
B. While browsing this site think about these questions: What is the main purpose of this site? How might a Hmong immigrant become more successful in the U.S. by using this site? Does this site promote the "Model Immigrant," stereotype and if so how?
With regard to Executive Order 9066, I believe that regardless of what the Executive Order may say, or in my opinion “try” to say, what the Asian Americans endured and the living conditions speak far louder than any written order could state. No, I do not believe that those interred had any idea what the order said. I read it five times and as an educated, English-speaking, American I could not make clear sense of the order. The order was clearly an action based in fear; fear of having the enemy behind our own borders. I believe the order was executed against the Japanese and not the German or European immigrants, as a result of the attack on Pearl Harbor. It seems logical that that attack could potentially cause the discriminatory action against the Japanese. Factor in the exceptionally strong family unit of the Asian culture and I
