who is enrolled in the third year unit entitled SLE303 Managing Environmental Projects at Deakin University. This unit is a core unit for the Bachelor of Environmental Science (Environmental Management and Sustainability) and the Sustainability Major for the Bachelor of Property and Real Estate. The unit may also be taken as an elective for other degrees within the university.
Aim of the assignment
The aim of this assignment is to give students first-hand practical experience of project planning and budgeting for a project with an environmental management or sustainability focus. In their future careers as environmental managers students will find that the skills they learn in this unit are amongst the ones that they will use and continue to develop. With this in mind students have been encouraged to develop their project management skills in an area of the industry where they see themselves working in the future. The project may be completed on behalf of an industry partner in the government or private sectors, or community based.
This assignment has six learning objectives that are to:
1. Liaise with an industry partner to create a plan for a one-off environmental management project
2. Plan the allocation of human resources within the context of an environmental management plan
3. Identify and schedule the resource requirements of an environmental management project
4. Design project monitoring and control strategies to incorporate into an environmental management project plan
5. Develop strategies to evaluating the success of the project and associated contracts
6. Analyse different approaches to contract implementation and management
Overview
The learning experience that students gain from working with an industry partner on a real world project is invaluable. It gives students insight into how the environmental management industry works, the organisation of work into projects, the balancing act between time, cost and quality, and the trade-offs that often need to be made to achieve an outcome.
In summary, students work with their industry partner to plan, resource and cost a project. They do not become involved in the implementation of the project. Students produce a report describing how the project is to be carried out, a Gantt chart outlining timelines and task relationships, and a budget/resources table for the project.
Your involvement would be a short meeting with the students to outline the project and possibly show them the project site. You could expect the student to arrange a meeting you within the next two weeks. The student will also contact you to clarify
