Speech
Hello fellow co-workers and students, today I will be talking about change in the chosen two texts, the connections between the texts and the readers, the concept of change in the texts and the internal and external factors of change. The texts I will be talking about are the novel After the First Death and Episode 1 and 2 of an Australian drama Seachange.
After the first death is about a terrorist gang that hijack a school bus and hold the children hostage. Among the terrorists are sixteen year old Miro and his mentor Artkin. Then there is Ben the Generals son, who is sent as a messenger to the bus by his father. The novel explores the difficult realities of loyalty and betrayal, courage, relationships and patriotism.
The connections made between reader and After the first death are made through ben a young teen boy going through harsh times this appeals to the target audience ,young adults. Throughout the book you learn about how his life has changed from the bus incident and his relationship with his father. In chapter one Ben explains what has happened to him and the pain
he has, therefore the connection made between reader and text is established due to Ben being a young boy in tough times with a bad relationship with his father .
In After the First Death change occurs mainly through the characters Ben and the young terrorist Miro
Ben is a young boy which half the story revolves around, change in Bens life occurs after he is sent to the hijacked bus by the general his father, as an innocent messenger he’s then captured, tortured and eventually shot in the crossfire. This effects Ben through External and internal change, External his shown through him being shot and then getting transferred to an academy
where he recovers. Internal change is shown in the way Ben’s personality and perspective of his dad change after the incident. Chapter 5 shows change of personality and mind. When Ben meets his father for the first time after the incident, emotive language and exaggeration are used to magnify the tension and emotions Ben feels with his father. This shows that by Ben physically changing it has affected his and his father’s mind state. This demonstrates that physical change can not only effect mind and body but others around you too.
Miro is the youngest of the group of terrorists that hijack the bus he has turned sixteen and as an initiation to manhood his mentor Artkin has told him to kill the bus driver. In Miro’s head he thinks that by killing the bus driver he can become a proper man and fully become a part of the group. Throughout the novel Miro deals with lots of emotions and problems within his head, like the death
of his brother and the fact that the bus driver ended up being a woman instead of a man. The novel looks a lot at changing perspectives. This change begins on page 56 where irony is utilized to show conflict occurring in Miro’s head. This shows that change is a part of all lives when our perspectives are challenge.
The novel shows how violence changes and ruins all lives touched by it, even those who perpetrate it.
In Seachange we are introduced to Laura Gibson a high flying corporate lawyer. In one day, her life falls apart, she loses out on a partnership at work, and discovers that her husband Jack has been arrested for fraud and is cheating on her. As a quick getaway she takes a job as a magistrate in a small seaside town called Pearl Bay where she once went for a holiday and takes her two children, her
eldest daughter Miranda and son Rupert. The life there is very different compared to her old life in the city and her family has difficulty fitting in. The series explores the difficulties in a relationship, change of self, and perspectives, courage and trust.
The connections in Seachange are developed between Laura’s family and the viewers. The target audience is adults, generally with families who can relate to this series. People can relate to Laura
