In F Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, the narrator Nick Caraway is brought into a world of money, drama, parties, and careless people. Wealthy people tend to be very careless and rely on their money whenever things go wrong. Jordan, a wealthy golfer, is very careless and expects others to stay out of her way. Tom, who was born into a wealthy family, has never had to support himself and out his own issues. Daisy, who is careless with her relationship with Tom and doesn’t think about the repercussions that her actions will have, These three characters monetary wealth allows them to be act recklessly and be careless with others.
At first Daisy is portrayed as a mistreated house wife; however it is later revealed that she is just as careless as her husband Tom. Soon after Gatsby and Tom meet, Daisy hosted a gathering at her house, while she was talking to Gatsby Tom noticed her say “you always look so cool.” Through this interaction Tom was able to hear the indering tone in her voice towards Gatsby, angered Tom suggested that they all drive into town. Being careless Daisy did not try to hide her growing feelings for Gatsby in front of Tom which lead to a larger argument deeper into the book. Once Gatsby had died, Nick realized that “[Tom and Daisy] was careless people, they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast careless, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made.” Although Daisy was about to leave Tom for Gatsby she acted carelessly and retreated back into her money and went off the map after his death.
