What is belonging?
Belonging can have many definitions; one of them is that it can be defined as a relationship with your family, friends or the society. Belonging can be a sense of identity of who you are and where you belong, your acceptance into a new family, or entering at a new school and finding new friends to build up a relationship with them.
The first text type I chosen to talk about is a picture book called ‘belonging’ written by Jeannie Baker. This book is about an unfriendliness city, but over time the city becomes into a place called home. Little by little each day the baby girl Tracy who grows up and the community who live in the city transforms the city by planting trees and grass and bushes to cover the empty spaces in the ground. The target audience of this book is for children’s under the age of 18.
The comments that are made about belonging in this book is “In ‘Belonging ‘I try to show an alienating cityscape (that could be anywhere) reclaim its Australian character. Australia is still wonderfully rich in its variety of native plants and animals. ‘Belonging celebrates using local indigenous plants to give a sense of place and regional character. And through the use of local plant species, the local native birds, animals and insects that had long since left are attracted back. The second text I have chosen to talk about is a song written by Kelly Clarkson and the song name is called ‘Breakaway’. The target audience of the song is for young adults. The song is about changing your life for the better; it's about making changes that will allow you to live your life as happiest as possible. This text links to ‘belonging’ because as your life start to change you start to feel that you belong to someone to somewhere. The comments made about belonging in this text is include in the line ‘Grew up in a small town meaning that she grew up being a adolescent, there was something that made her life harder than most people.’ This shows that belonging is a concept of growing in place where you feel like home, and to have a sense of identity.
In this song at has used an emotive language to convey the ideas of belonging. The emotive language used is ‘Out of the darkness and into the sun; But I won't forget all the ones that I love.’ This line of the lyrics of the song conveys the ideas about belonging, because as she is finally able to free herself to the outside life, she is also accepts that she has to let go of her family; this shows that belonging into a family cannot emancipated because the family is where she finds herself to be. Another language used in this text is an idiom. The idioms used is ‘Want to feel the warm breeze, Sleep under a palm tree, Feel the rush of the ocean, Get on board a fast train’. This text is different to the first text because the first text conveys belonging is about the community people helping each other and having the sense of identity and building a relationship with each other within the community, so that they all feel like they belong in a family, whereas the second text is not about helping each other and having as sense of identity, but it is about changing your life for the better; it's about making changes that will allow you to live your life as
