It’s fascinating that diversity whether people like it or not is part of an everyday life that people don’t really notice is going on; it is seen in communities that usually consist of people who decide to live with other people who are not of the same race, but there are also people who decide not to live in a diverse community because of the high population of a racial group that they prefer not to be among. Being surrounded by a racial group, that people may not feel comfortable, to live around is not the only sign of what diversity is. Difference is what diversity mean, but it’s not what everyone may think it mean. Diversity can be a person that is live in a community that may be filled with the same racial population but is diverse in the different type of jobs that is in that community compared to other communities. Some people may argue that diversity is not cared about around the world, and others may have a rebuttal against it saying that it is cared about. As much as people are fighting for diversity, it isn’t really cared for that much in America anymore. To begin, David Brooks has an article that was published called “People Like Us”. David’s view on how Americans are more comfortable with being in an environment where they are surrounded by people like themselves. Brooks feels as though, people in America aren’t admitting to the obvious, that people don’t care that much about diversity (Brooks, 1). In “The Downside of Diversity” by Michael Jonas, he writes about Robert Putnam’s research and “how to handle the unsettling social changes” (Jonas, 4) this text demonstrates people’s unwillingness to change that Brooks would agree to. In Brooks’ article, he talks about how people in America talk a great deal about how important diversity is, but, deep down inside, they know it’s something that isn’t cared that much about. In his article, David Brooks goes on in to give examples of how maybe, somewhere, in this country there might be diverse groups coming together living in one neighborhood where diversity isn’t of concern to them; for example, Brooks demonstrates in his article, how in this country, there aren’t people of diverse backgrounds living in the same neighborhood like that, but instead people are grouping themselves with the same type of people who are the same as they are rather then be open minded. In Putnam’s article “The Downside of Diversity”, his contention is based on “Diversity, at least in the short run, seems to bring out the turtle in all of us” (Page, 65) is something that Brooks would agree with, for he thought that people should live in places that are diverse which Putnam’s research would add a great clarity on his ideas. In addition, living in a diverse community may be something that people, in America, cannot get use to which must be the reason why they are so hesitant to live in one. Most Americans may want to be around people who are the same as them; people who they can trust and be comfortable around. Although, people who don’t live, in diverse communities are more likely to want to come out of their shells and experience more of what other people from different backgrounds have to offer. For example, according to “The Downside of Diversity”, by Michael Jonas, “But by hanging out with people different than you, you’re likely to get more insights. Diverse teams tend to be more productive” (Page, 60). This is something Brooks would agree to because it shows how living in a diverse community isn’t as bad as people in America make it seem. To continue, does diversity just have to do with race and ethnicity?
