What is stress? Stress is a negative emotional state occurring in response to events that are perceived as taxing or exceeding a person's resources or ability to cope, says Cohen & Herbert. There is now evidence to show that those who have large amounts of stress in their lives are more susceptible to health problems and injuries. 43% of all adults suffer adverse health affects due to stress. 75-90% of all visits to the primary care physician are for stress-related complaints or disorders. And 60-80% of industrial accidents are due to stress. The American institution of Stress defines stress as physical, mental, or emotional strain or tension
Stress has also been linked to all of the leading causes of death, including cancer, heart disease, accidents, lung ailments, cirrhosis, and suicide, according to the American Institute of Stress. I am interested in this subject because I am always under a tremendous amount of stress. I’m a college student and therefore under different kinds of stress on a daily basis, and have been one for the majority of my life. Along with being a competitive student comes failure, which in turn brings an extreme amount of stress to one not used to it. I absolutely hate to come second. It is the worst feeling in the world. When I lose, or feel like I have let some one down, I take it extremely hard. The stress I bring on myself is tremendous, and by realizing its affects I have tried to accept coming in second a little more easily. Therefore in my speech, I am going to do my best to give you an understanding of stress, and how to manage that stress. There are many reasons for stress, and everyone here probably has their own reasons I’m going to stick to three main reasons that you can probably relate to. The first is the amount of schoolwork. College can be so demanding due to such a heavy workload that we’re expected to keep up with. It’s so easy to get overwhelmed. We have projects, tests, papers, midterms, and finals. Stress can easily build without a good strategy of tackling these assignments. A second reason is pressure to do well. Pressure to get goof grades, and do their best. Healing website conducted a research and found that 71 percent of college students say that their grades have a direct effect on their level of stress. Pressure to do well can also be external, that’s your family, friends, teachers, and professors, everyone that wants to see you be successful one day. Wanting to live up to high expectations that they place on you can be pretty stressful. A third reason is change in the environment. Now this may affect some of us more than others depending on where you’re from, but going away to college means leaving behind everything that’s familiar.
