Transport
During the hundred years of the 20th century technology advanced more than it had in the previous 10,000 years. Advances have been made how man transports himself across land, seas and through the air. Sea travel has been used to transport mankind for thousands of years and train travel has been used for around 200 years. Air travel, however has been an innovation of the 20th century as well as the automobile. Man has also been able to conquer the nearer reaches of Space.
The rapid advance of travel technology has meant that the world has become a melting pot of cultures. It is possible that in another 100 years we may all look the same and speak the same language.
Air Travel
The first manned flight was by Richard Pearse of Timaru on March 31st 1902 at Waitohi NZ. He designed and built the first plane and the internal combustion engine to propel it.
The aeroplane has been one of the greatest contributing factors towards the integration of world cultures. The first and Second World War may not have been world wars had it not been the advancements in travel.
Water Transport
Man has been building and sailing ships for thousands of years. Today’s Ocean Liners are of a phenomenal size. On board are facilities such as
•restaurants
•lounges
•theatres
•halls
•golf courses
•ice rinks
•casinos
•libraries
•spa pools
•swimming pools
Other Types of shipping Transport include freight, laboratories, submarines, and air craft
Future
There aren’t any limits to sea travel; the facilities that can be accommodated on any medium island can be put aboard a ship. There is a proposed 2.7 million ton Freedom ship that is a mile long and 25 stories high. This will have a community for a 1000 residents.
Rail Transport
Most significant developments have occurred over the past 50 years that has meant that rail travel is still the quickest way to travel across land. In Japan the bullet trains carry passengers at speeds of over 300 km an hour.
Train advancements
Tilting carriages allow trains to travel around curves and bends much faster
Air conditioning
Depressurised cabins
Entire networks of trains are monitored and controlled by computer systems that reduce human error
Integrated reservation and ticketing system linking rental cars, hotels and air flights.
Road Travel
