Good Morning Miss Bett and Fellow class mates Let’s go back 153 years. The year is 1861 and the American civil war has just commenced. Imagine you are black and living in Americas south. Your parents are slaves and it’s likely that your father has been sold off to another family and you haven’t seen him for some time. Your mother could be working on a farm or as a domestic/maid. You would be working too. If you were a girl you have probably been sold to another family as a domestic and if you were a good worker and male you would be working on the farm too. In return for your labour you would be given somewhere to sleep and food but not a wage and certainly not an education. As the war took hold in 1963 the black population of the south saw the possibilities of their lives improving. With the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863 – this new law said people were no longer allowed to be slaves - your family may have left their owners and to set up in the new army camps to commence your life as a free person. Hopefully you were reunited with your father and other family members. Your parents could now marry legally. My topic is the Education of the Blacks in the south after the Civil war.
Before the Civil War, a lot of African-Americans were slaves, but there were plenty of free black people as well. Some black people were quite well off. And some of them were even slave-owners themselves. For those who were slaves, life was very hard before the war. They worked long hours in the fields, and lived in small cabins. The women would have to work all day in the fields beside the men, and then go home and do all the cooking, cleaning, and washing. Children were looked after by grandparents or older brothers and sisters until they were old enough to work. Families could be broken up at any time if their owners decided to sell a husband or wife, or their children.
After the Civil War, the ones who had been slaves were free. However, in the southern states, legislation was passed to restrict the rights of black people so that, for instance, although they were legally entitled to vote, it was made practically impossible for them to do so in many states by the so-called 'literacy laws' and by threats, intimidation etc. Many black people, who had been slaves wanted to move around after they were free - from job to job or plantation to plantation. Patience, an ex-slave in South Carolina, passed up a profitable job cooking for her former owner "I must go" she said "If I stay here I'll never know I'm free." The black population of Atlanta, about 20 percent before the war, reached 46 percent after the war. Most were women who got jobs as laundresses, frequently working in their own homes where they could watch their children while making some money. By the 1880s, nearly 98 percent of black women in the workforce were domestics. White people often resented the fact that free black people could now have things they never had as slaves, including pretty clothes. Women who had spent their lives alternating between the two smocks they were given each Christmas by the master felt proud and independent walking down the street in colourful dresses and hats. Their husbands felt proud too, because their wives' clothing showed the world that they were good providers. Newly freed families also wanted to keep the women at home. Mothers who had been forced to leave their children behind when they went out to the fields wanted to stay with them. Husbands revelled in the idea of having their wives devote all their time to cooking and keeping house. Everyone wanted to protect their daughters from the clutches of greedy employers. The white community, however, was horrified at the idea of black women becoming full-time housewives. Life after the Civil War however, was very different. Black children would most likely go to school and be given an education. The men who served as solders were given the right to vote and were treated as
Civil War Research Paper There were many issues that led to the American Civil War. Among these issues were slavery, education, and the disagreement on women's rights. While there is no issue on the actual events that led to the Civil War, there is a disagreement over the exact causes that led to the war. This paper is about the civil war, about how it ended slavery with the emancipation proclamation, women's rights movements, & education during the Civil War. In today's world women are aloud…
of stunning accomplishments in every field of human endeavor, from literature and art to science, industry, education, diplomacy, athletics, jurisprudence, even polar exploration. The great African Americans of our history found something outside of themselves to use as a goal and a guide to overcome prejudice. With these strong people we were able to explore the struggle for freedom and civil rights in a society where racial segregation and discrimination knew no regional boundaries. Throughout…
Second World War was the main reason the position of African Americans improved in the years 1945-1955? The Second World War was an absolutely huge factor in improving the position of African Americans between 1945-55 as it led to Federal Support. However it wasn’t as important as the use of Direct Action which for the first time, was able to convert De Jure change into De Facto change, which other methods such as federal support, Supreme Court rulings, and the work of other civil rights organisations…
African Americans after the civil war African Americans enjoyed freedom and rights that their slaves’ ancestors could only dream of after the Civil War. Nearly a quarter of a million slaves received education in 1869. Although they faced discrimination during the end of 19th and the 20th century and a lot of white people didn’t like the idea that African Americans should have an education. The Southern government created a law called “Black Codes” that prevents former slaves from enjoying the benefits…
because they are rich countries. They are three reasons why people migrate in today’s world: study, unemployment, and wars. First of all, education is one fact that makes people emigrate. All over the world many countries have big education problem, so these countries force their citizen to emigrate to others countries. For example, my Angola is a country that has a big problem on education. Our educational system is very weak. As result of that, when we finish high school, we have to leave our country…
clearing the land and to plant new crops so colonization to continue to spread. In fact, it spread at such a rate that landowners began to become more dependent on their slaves, Slaves began to have variances in value depending on their skills, education, and muscle. During this time the African slaves fulfilled for tailoring, blacksmiths, long shore men, goldsmiths, and woodworking, even a guide for ships in and out of harbors (Davidson, 2008). Slavery differed in by geographical location, local…
Oftentimes, immigrants, African Americans, and Hispanics were excluded from this prosperity. Particularly African Americans carried this fight on and the Civil Rights movement grew. Also, the post-war tension with the Soviet Union was bound to shape the 60’s. The threat of communism and nuclear warfare touched nearly every aspect of life and the Cold War propelled many new math and science innovations. The new consumerism culture in the US also impacted the 60’s because, Americans started a new way of…

Alabama was the day that set the tone for the next 30 years in the United States. Rosa Parks a black woman stood up for herself and all of those who were too afraid. She refused to give up her seat to a white man when asked to move to the back of the bus. From this event the Civil Rights Movement was brought to the forefront of Americas problems. Rosa Parks was born in Tuskegee, Alabama in a world that said blacks were “free and equal”. She grew up with her grandfather. Even back when she was a child the KKK was tormenting blacks…
What were the causes of the American Civil War? The Civil War happened due to the many differences between the North and the South. For example economic, social, cultural and political differences. These all helped lead America to a Civil War. But to an extent, the most important cause was the fact there were many disagreements with states' rights versus federal rights. It was clear that there was always going to be a conflict between the federal government and the state governments because…
