Drinking and Driving LARGEST CAUSE OF TRAFFICE ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
Drunk driving is one of the biggest causes of traffic accidents and fatalities in the United States. Driving despite the fact that you are intoxicated can be very devastating on your life as well as other people. Driving in spite of the fact you are intoxicated is one of the most dangerous situations you can put yourself or anyone else involved in. The evidence today about people driving while intoxicated have left many people with unanswered questions, broken hearts and always asking the question why. This is a problem-taking place all over the Untied States. You are considered driving under the influence of alcohol when your blood alcohol level is .08 grams per deciliter or higher. According to the most recent statistics by the National Commission Against Drunk Driving in 2011 9,878 people were killed in alcohol driving crashes. These fatalities accounted for 31 percent of the total motor vehicle traffic fatalities in the United States.
In 2011 alcohol driving crashes decreased by 2.5 percent from 10,136 in 2010 to 9,878 in 2011. This rate is determined by 100 million vehicle miles traveled that year.
On the average that is about one alcohol impaired driving fatality that occurred every 53 minute in 2011.
They also stated that the number fatal crashes declined for a lot of vehicles, the biggest decline was with large trucks (16%) and vans (9%). On the other hand Fatal crashes involving motorcycle operators increased by 29 percent.
The average driver of these crashes in 2011 had a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or higher these were drivers between the ages of 21 to 24 (32%) next was the ages of 25 to 34 (30%) followed by 35 to 44 (24%). The drivers with a BAC of .08 or higher involved in these fatal crashes was 24 percent males and 14 percent females.
The percentages with a BAC of .08 or higher in 2011 driving and caused a fatal accident was 29 percent for motorcycles, 24 percent for passenger cars, and 21 percent for trucks. The percentage of truck drivers was 1 percentage.
The sad thing about these fatal crashes is that most of the drivers had prior convictions for driving while impaired.
In todays society we should be well aware of the fact that drinking and driving is illegal. Not only drinking but prescription drugs are not exclude from this list,
This year alone WBBM’s Bernie Tatoya reported “973 people have died on Illinois in 2013 that’s 18 more people than in 2012. This is due to the fact that more people where driving. He stated the due to the fact gas prices increased a few years’ prior less people were driving so the fatality rate went down. “1
The penalties in Illinois for a driving under the influence (DIU) may very depending on the circumstances of the arrest and conviction. This will involve the driver’s age, BAC, if there is a person in the car under 16ys of age and if the driver has prior DUI convictions.

Laws
There is a rule of conduct that we should follow because society says that we have to follow them. If you choose not to abide by them there are consequences that you will have to pay.
The drinking and driving laws have been place into law to try and prevent a lot of the drink driver. When you choose to get behind the wheel after having too much to drink, you only set yourself up to fail. The laws that are in place can ruin your life just as well as you driving drunk can ruin someone else life. Most of are states have set it up so that first time (DUI) offenders can have a Breath Alcohol Interlock installed in their vehicles. Illinois also requires you to have a camera to take a picture of the driver taking the test. And buy doing this they can still drive with suspended licenses.
