The age that a citizen of the United States of America is considered an adult should be 18. Many rights and liberties that characterize adulthood are granted at this important milestone. To name a few: The right to vote and the ability to join the army. However, many other liberties are not accessible until the age of 21. I believe the age at which a citizen is considered an adult, and is permitted to partake in the all rights therein, should be 18. First, let’s examine the rights already available at 18 years of age. The age of 18 allows a US citizen to vote, join the military, register for the draft, get married and receive medical care without parental consent (Source A). All of these are important rights. At 18 we, as a people, have decided that a person is old enough to understand the gravity of such decisions as medical care and active military combat. However, such rights as the ability to drink, smoke, and use tobacco products aren’t accessible until 21(Source C). As it stands right now, our country believes that a young person is mature enough to decide to lay down his life for the nation but not mature enough to drink responsibly (Source C). Compounding this, the current Age of Majority in all but five states is 18(Source F). If we are enlightened enough to deicide to consider our 18 year old children competent enough to fight for us, then I believe they should be able to drink with us as well. The legal age of adulthood should happen only once, at age 18. We
Ever since 1984, the drinking age limit has been 21. Of course before that year it was age 18. By 1988, all 50 states had fallen in line and by that, I mean that they were forced into changing it. Should the states have changed the age limit? Should the drinking age be at age 18 instead of 21? The answer is yes, it should. A lot of people believe that a person is an adult when they hit the age of 18. At 18, you can go to war, get married or even join the military. 18-year-olds do grown-up…
Drinking age If we are hereby to vote for age 18 as a legal drinking age how would you respond; will it be yes or no, I prefer to go with yes besides some might offer a dreadful advice to oppose my judgment but how do we know if it was yes or it should not be. Many of the 50 U.S states have their minimum drinking age set at 21. Who says it is right, though? If one is 18 years or older they are considered to be an adult according to the constitution of United States. Turning 18 allowed people…

According to data from the International Center for Alcohol Policies, in 1988, all 50 US states unified the minimum legal drinking age (MLDA) for alcohol at 21 years of age. Some people assert the MLDA21 should be lowered to a younger age, while others expect it to remain the same. The age limit for alcohol is based on research which…

better. The legal drinking age has been 21 since the 1980’s, but that has not stopped teens and young adults from consuming alcohol. In the argument over whether to lower the legal drinking age from 21 to 18, three noteworthy questions involve how consumption of alcohol can higher or lower the fatality rate, it can help teach young adults to consume alcohol in moderation, and the effects of drinking towards adolescence. One argument that is examined is that having the drinking age where it is at now…
Research Narrative My topic is the legal drinking age. Specifically I am researching why the legal drinking ages should be lowered from 21 to 18 years old. I believe that this is a very important and interesting topic because the community that it affects the most is college students. I have learned a lot about the community and what a community is through all the readings that we have been doing in class. I found that the article that related most to my topic was the first article by Carter…

the U.S. Lower its Drinking Age? Among the policies and laws discussed on college campuses one that is rather popular to discuss is whether the U.S. should lower the legal drinking age. At one point in time the drinking age in most states was below 21. With the increase in traffic accidents, especially among young people, President Reagan signed the Highway Act of 1984 that said the federal government will take away highway money if the states do not raise their minimum age to 21. While many young…
