Domestic violence in when an intimate partner, such as a spouse or a person you cohabit with, physically, sexually, or psychologically abuses you.
Abusers come from all different types of backgrounds. Although there is no known cause why some people abuse others, there are theories to explain their behaviors. However, nothing can justify their cruel actions and they must take responsibility.
Domestic Violence affects all races, ethnicities, and genders. It occurs in dating relationships, in marriages, in heterosexual relationships, and in homosexual relationships. However, it is more prevalent among women, especially immigrant women. Furthermore, domestic violence affects the children who witness it in their homes repeatedly. The injuries acquired by being exposed to this violence or by experiencing this violence directly ranges from physical injuries to psychological and emotional injures.
There are federal laws in the United States that protect domestic violence victims. The Violence
Against Women Act, passed in 1994, is an act passed to protect and help victims and their families.
The Gun Control Act, passed in 1994, makes it illegal for abusers to hold guns in certain domestic situations. There are also laws that make moving from state to state easier for victims and make all states recognize the terms of any protection order, even if a particular state does not share the same terms. Immigrants also have certain rights, such as the right to hospital care and help from the police. They do not have to say their immigration status to the police or answer questions about their birthplace.
They also cannot be denied emergency medical care from a public hospital. However, they should not contact the INS (Immigration and Naturalization Service) in any case.
Victims can get help several ways. The first is to prevent domestic violence offhand by noticing vital signs early. If that was not successful, there are crisis hotlines available to domestic violence victims that can help them get out of the situation and offer such things as housing and counseling.
