Divorce
Divorce is the termination of a marital union, the concealing of the legal duties and responsibilities of marriage and the dissolving of the bonds of matrimony between a married couple. Divorce is one of the most serious social problems in the modern world. It has become very common recently, but in the past divorce was quite rare. Today, however, a majority of marriages break up in the first few years. Divorce can affect a family or married couples psychologically, financially, and academically .
The first common effect of divorce is psychological illness in children, and young adults. The poorly managed conflict between parents increases the children risk of behaviour problems, depression, dependence, substance abuse, and poor social skills. Divorce is associated with diminished psychological well-being in children and adult offspring of divorced parents. Great unhappiness, fear of isolation and loneliness, and physical complaints are all symptoms of psychological illness in children. According to former president of the Academy of Family Mediators and prominent divorce researcher Joan kelly,PhD, “Depending on the strength of the parent-child bond at the time of divorce,the parent-child relationship diminishes over time and affect them psychologically.” Also 75 percent of children from divorced parents are likely to experience conflict in their own marriages, and are more likely to experience divorce themselves.
In addition, divorce can make people have financial challenges. The expenses associated with the physical custody of children after divorce, and division of debt make some families face financial challenges. Divorce can also result in changes in income of taxes for each or both spouses. It also involves distribution of properties or division of properties due to legal process,agreement, and premiums. For example, my 38-year-old aunt, who is a single mom of three after divorcing her husband last october faces some financial difficulties. Sometimes its difficult for her to pay her bills and to buy some domestic materials for her kids without asking for support from family or friends. According to professor John W.Santrock, “ A divorce may result in the parent and children moving to an area of poverty rate and a poor educational system all due to financial struggles of a single parent.’’
