Division of classes is a problematic situation that not only affects Paris, but many societies around the world. Many intentions have been implanted towards all working classes leading to an extreme transition of the livelihood of citizens. The modernization of the city would assist in the way citizens dealt with their daily lives in terms of socialization. In this era, the upper class perceived themselves as a dominant class. Paris consisted of three major classes that made the city what it is today; the upper class, middle class and lower class. Due to the power retained by the upper class, they were looked at in a civilized manner; whereas, the peasants were looked at as a threat to society. Today, division of classes is looked at as an act of superiority over the inferior class. Through social, political and economical inequalities, one is able to see how these factors played a major role in identifying class divisions in the city.

Social disparities are another way in which class divisions can be seen in the city. It is seen through the interaction and integration in the city, alongside the placement of social classes. Through Auguste Renoir’s, ‘Dance at the Moulin de la Galette’, 1876, the image illustrates class separations in the city. Through class division, it is seen that upper classes obtain a lifestyle where they have a keen eye on art, music, fashion and food. One’s taste can easily determine as to what class they belong to. The servant, shown in the photograph, is apart of the working class wearing dreadful clothing. This gives a sense of unworthy existence amongst the upper class and that the lower classes must serve them. During this period, music and dance played the source of entertainment. It is a privilege to attend shows in the music halls, but a huge number of citizens whom were apart the underclass that were not eligible to partake in the festivities. The upper classes, which were at the top, were the elite class and were the most influential in the way the city circulates. Thus, it is seen how social disparities is very crucial for the class divisions in the city as it has effects on socialization.

Class divisions can be seen through economic disparity that is affected by the lucrative market. Middle class and peasants possess skills which assist them in hard labour were impacted as the division of classes commenced. Baron Haussmann’s reconstruction of Paris meant the rearrangement of the layout alongside the people that led to moving the working class into the outer layer of Paris. It is clearly evident that no matter what the lower classes accomplish, they will always remain at the bottom of the socioeconomic class.

Tension is created as authorities must regulate the behavior of workers in and minimize wage. The wage paid to workers varies radically. It is known that once they are “born working class, die working class.” It clearly displays the true colors of the city; that is, position in society is dependent on where the person comes from.
