Divergent
Divergent is a 2014 American film directed by Neil Burger. The story takes place in Illinois, Chicago in a futuristic world. Society is broken down into five factions: Abnegation (the selfless), Amity (the peaceful), Candor (the honest), Dauntless (the brave), and Erudite (the intelligent). Members are given an aptitude test that suggests where they would best fit, although it’s a personal choice. Beatrice Prior has spent her whole life in Abnegation with her family and older brother, Caleb. Beatrice has gotten the test results of fitting into more than one faction, which makes her Divergent.
Each year, every sixteen year old is required to take a serum-based test that determines the faction they would best fit. The next morning they reveal their choice at the Choosing Ceremony. Tris is taken into a mirrored room that allows her to see herself from all angles. Tori gives Tris the serum to drink while attaching the electrodes. The serum causes you to undergo a simulation that puts you into dangerous situations to see how you will react. Their reactions in the simulation determine what faction they would best fit in. Beatrice wakes up to Tori explaining that her test results are inconclusive. A million thoughts began to run through Beatrice’s mind. “What does this mean?” She keeps asking herself. Tori explains that she shows characteristics of three factions Abnegation, Dauntless and Erudite, meaning she is Divergent. Tori records her results as Abnegation and recommends for Beatrice to keep her results confidential because if anyone were to find out she could be in serious danger.
The next morning at the Choosing Ceremony, Beatrice's brother Caleb chooses Erudite, and Beatrice chooses Dauntless. The Dauntless members are to jump from a moving train and take a leap of faith from a tall building into a large dark hole. Beatrice volunteers to be the first to jump off the building and leap into the hole. After the jump, when Four asks for her name, Beatrice decides to shorten it to "Tris’. The Dauntless initiates are given two tests: Physical and Mental. The results determine how the members are ranked for eliminations. During these tests, the initiates are introduced to Eric, who is the leader of Dauntless, and Four, the instructor of transfer initiates'. Tris’ struggles in Dauntless training, but improves after being forced to fight her enemy, Peter. If they are not ranked then they get cut, which makes them “factionless”. Tris and Peter fight, with Peter being significantly bigger than Tris’, she gets beaten up very badly, getting sent to the infirmary. Christina and Will, who are other Dauntless members, wake Tris’ up in the Infirmary informing her Eric has cut her from Dauntless after she and Peter’s match. Getting cut during initiation makes someone factionless, and this was something Tris’ was not going to accept. She escapes from the infirmary and sprints to the train to join the other members going on to the next step. Tris’ not giving up impresses Eric, and lets her join the game. Dauntless members are playing a game of Capture the flag. Four and Eric each have their own team. Fours team tries to discus strategies to find the other teams flag, but Tris’ goes upon her self to climb up the Ferris wheel to get a better idea on where the flag is located. Fours team wins the game, which causes them to win all respect for Tris’ back allowing her to stay in Dauntless.
After the physical stage of Dauntless training, the initiates are put into simulations in order to face their fears. While Dauntless members are taking supplies from Amity on to trucks, Tris sees her mother. She asked her if her true results were Dauntless. After Tris revealing that her results were inconclusive, her mom told her not to let anyone know because Erudite is looking for Divergents. Four watches Tris as she goes through her fears and finds out she is Divergent because it only took her a few minutes, which is abnormal. With
