Disease in the News: Aids Curbing Circumcision Device
Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome has been around for many years. The study to find a cure or suppressant for the disease continues. All kinds of invention are being tested to lower the number of victims this epidemic takes over every day. He hopes for finding a cure is far away but the hopes for finding a suppressor gets closer to success.
No one really has any idea of where Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome started. Individuals have only been able to guess the history of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome but do not have any for sure facts. There has been many speculation of where AIDS actually came from however it has been found that the largest number of individuals affected by the virus is found in Africa. Africa has been known to house the highest number of individuals with HIV and full blown AIDS.
Recently an article in the New York Times suggested that a new circumcision device was being tested. The device is called Pre Pex. Pre Pex is a nonsurgical device used to perform adult circumcisions. Pre Pex is a ring used for circumcising adult males with the same concept as a newborns umbilical cord clamp. Pre Pex will be placed on by two Nurses. The circular clamp is placed over the foreskin and clamped down. After a week or two the skin clamped by the Pre Pex will die and then the access skin can be removed painlessly. The purpose of this procedure is in hopes to curb AIDS. When a man is not circumcised it is easier for him to carry and transmit diseases and bacteria’s. If a man is circumcised it is not as easy to carry the disease or bacteria. In some countries males are circumcised at birth. In other countries men are not circumcised at birth leading them to become uncircumcised adult males. Once a male becomes an adult he is less likely to get circumcised although he may know that is safer. With a device that offers a nonsurgical option, males are more likely to get the circumcision procedure done.
The device will be covered by the Presidents Emergency Plan for Aids Relief. The procedure will be done on about 2, 500 men in a few cities in Africa. The cities consist of Lesotho, Malawi, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda. There will be similar studies in Kenya, Mozambique, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe that will be funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will also fund a similar device called the Shang Ring with the same concept. The Shang Ring however will require some surgery.
Everyone has high hopes for the device in terms that this device will help fight the Aids epidemic. The fact still remains that Africa is not the only country that is struggling with the epidemic. Even if
