Discuss the skills and attitudes required to work with children, young people and families In this essay I will be researching policies, frameworks and reports that have highlighted skills and attitudes required to work with children, young people and families. I will also look at government documents such as EPPE, Common Core Framework and Every Child Matters. From my research I will discuss my findings and go on to include some personal opinions and reflection of my experience within settings. In section one I will define skills and attitudes and explain how they are relevant to practice and discuss why they are important. It helps to understand the child or young person’s behaviour and the context to why it occurs and to help support the child through any unexpected changes. It also helps to see whether a child has any developmental delays or issues if recorded and observed continuously in the correct manner. Through proper observation the practitioner can assist and support the parent/ career and be there for reassurance if any issues with developmental delays arise.
The third skill highlighted is Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of the child. This is a skill that requires responsibility and vigilant observation as you will need to be able to recognise when a child is struggling or has any potential health concerns. As well as keeping the child free from danger and promoting well-being and a good quality of life.
Building upon this is the knowledge and understanding of what is meant by safeguarding and ways in which children can be harmed, also the role of the parent/carer and how to involve them accordingly. To be able to recognise the signs of abuse and to understand that sometimes it can be very subtle and expressed by children in different ways, for example in children’s play with or without others and in their work.
