In 1999, West Virginia Division of Veteran Affairs commissioned a statue to honor female veterans. When the statue was unveiled three years later it was criticized. The critics believed the statue was not “feminine enough.” As of 2012, the official design has not been completed. In New York, a statue in the Women’s Veterans Memorial, intended to look like Lady Liberty, was criticized for being too masculine. This controversy is related to women’s pursuit of equality and the paradox of gender because women want the statue to resemble a woman, not a women with male characteristics. The appropriate visual representation of women’s role in today’s military should depict what an average woman looks like. The visual should represent an average build for a woman, medium to long hair, and a face that represents a focus and screams that she is in charge. Each visual on page 3 gives a paradox of gender equality and about men and women think of women. Mullins’ statue depicts a veteran woman as a strong person who is sticking two flags strongly on the ground. The New York’s Women Veterans Memorial in Albany shows a female veteran with beautiful curly hair and drapes dangling from her arms. She is also in posing in an elegant manner. The paradox is that women want to be viewed just as strong as men but when they receive a statue depicting a strong woman they turn it down.
