// Background
With the advent of an increasingly competitive tourism destination market worldwide, tourism driven economies witness increased demand for state-of-the-art performance infrastructure. To date, Whistler remains one of North America’s marquis visitor destinations. It’s reputation and capacity led it to become the host mountain community for the 2010 Winter Games. The result of this honour offers Whistler a unique opportunity to review and upgrade its capacity to host multi-disciplinary cultural and sport programming for the community and visitors alike. In 2008, The Resort Municipality of Whistler retained the services of FanTan Group in the capacity of Performance Venue Consultants. The purpose was to review existing plans for Whistler Olympic Plaza (WOP) and make recommendations on design and infrastructure elements in context of the site’s post-Olympic performance and presentation capacity. In undertaking this process, the consultants devised a three phase stakeholder input process that began with reviewing pre-existing community planning and local input combined with interviews with key organizations and individuals throughout Whistler. Key considerations were made upon reviewing this and other key pieces such as the Whistler Olympic Plaza Master Plan public consultation feedback.
