Depression
Depression is a medical illness that causes a person to have persistent feelings of sadness and loss of interest in the world that surrounds them. Depression can even end up causing some physical symptoms too. If you have depression you may find it troubling to do your day to day activities and can make you feel like your life is not worth living. This feeling of sadness is more than just the blues and it just isn’t something you can snap out of. People don’t realize that depression is way more than that. Most people with depression can start to feel better if they seek help from professionals.
There are many symptoms of depression like loss of interest or pleasure in normal activities, insomnia or excessive sleeping, changes in appetite, fatigue and loss of energy, and frequent thoughts of death, dying and suicide. For a lot of people these symptoms of depression are so severe that most of the people around them can tell something isn’t right. Depression affects everyone in a different way so it is important to remember the symptoms that can cause depression.
If you start to feel depressed you should make an appointment to see your health care provider as soon as you can. If you can’t get in soon enough go to the emergency room and tell them how you have been feeling. If you don’t feel comfortable talking to a professional talk to a friend or a loved one and or someone you can trust. There is no shame in how you are feeling and this is so important to remember.
It is not really unknown what exactly causes depression but there are many factors that can contribute to it. But the most common causes of depression are certain events in your life like a death of a loved one, financial problems, and things that cause you high stress. Even early childhood trauma can lead to depression. There really isn’t any way to prevent depression but taking some steps to controlling your stress can definitely help. Just try and remember that depression is easiest to treat when you see the earliest signs of it and it can help from worsening it. Long term treatment can also help prevent a relapse of depression. Most students have never lived away from home and learning how to adapt to that can be very stressful. They have to learn how to support and take care of themselves. This is especially hard for students that are close to their family. This can make them all alone and extremely sad. If they have a hard time meeting new people this can also cause them a lot more stress. Even haven’t to study and find a job can be very challenging and stressful. I think students that become so stressed become very depressed. They don’t want to tell anyone because they don’t want people to think they are a failer so they hold it all in. I truly believe this can lead to suicide. I think it is important for the parents to learn the signs of depression so they can help their child from suffering from depression. I think this is one of the major causes of death in college students. I personally feel that depression leads to so much more. I think it leads a person to consume alcohol and even drugs. They try everything in their power to try and feel better. We all know that alcohol and drugs don’t actually help the problem but for them they feel like it helps at the time. This can even lead to them overdosing and dying. It is sad that depression is the
