An underlying cause of unipolar and bipolar disorders is depression. A mood emotion and disorder of depression affects many individuals and is one of the highest health conditions most Americans suffer. “Depression is a low, sad state in which life seems dark and its challenges overwhelming,” (Comer, 2006). “Bipolar disorder occurs in both men and women. About 5.7 million people in the United States have the disorder,” (Mara Aloi, 2012).

Stress may be the strongest symptom to bring about depression. Bipolar disorder is an emotional mood that develops at different periods of time which triggers depression. Panic is a good word to describe a person diagnosed with Bipolar disorder. “In the usual case, bipolar disorder first appears in late adolescence in the form of a manic episode,” (Allow, 2004). An individual is sensitive and negative emotions overcome the individual. From one moment to the next an individual may suffer from euphoria to sadness. Activities begin to lack; energy is decreased to a point of fatigue. This type of depression may also be categorized as manic depressive disorder. A person becomes careless; the appearance of the person lacks the personal touch because there is no desire to look and feel great. Concentrating may become difficult and a person loses the interest to think. The behavior becomes careless and loses interest in socializing. Withdraw begins to occur in individuals with bipolar disorders. A person begins to feel and think of pain and suffering and may even imagine unrelated illnesses to the health. The state of depression develops and the thought of suicide occurs. Individuals believe there is no reason to live, or is needed by others. If a person with bipolar disorder does not treat the depression, it may be detrimental to the health.

Unipolar conditions may develop biologically. “Depression is the most common of mental disorders, with roughly 5 to 10% suffering from severe unipolar depression each year (this statistic is known as a 'point prevalence'), and about 17% of adults experiencing some form of depression at some point in their lives,” (Auger, Gerber, Malecek, & Schaffer, 2010). Low levels of norephinephrine and serotonin have been traced to unipolar depression along with another transmitter in the brain cause unipolar conditions. Unipolar conditions have been linked to be predisposed genetically. The same symptoms are experienced of depression such as the ones for bipolar disorder.

Individuals who suffer from depression have a different variety of therapy choices. The psychodynamic therapy allows individuals to cope with skills and learn from the development of social support. The Interpersonal Psychotherapy model applies. Cognitive therapies help individuals identify the maladaptive behaviors. The negativity and
