One form of communication without words is Paralinguistic, in this form a person uses certain noises such as deeper tones, high or low pitches and different inflictions to get their message out. There are many forms of demonstrative communication which are extremely effective as well, such as body language. Body language consists of many movements and actions like the folding or crossing of the arms or the crossing of the legs, the finger pointing or even the way someone is greeted when hands are shaken. Another effective and often used form of demonstrative communication would be the use of eye contact. Eye contact can be a very powerful and extremely effective form of demonstrative communication, it is very direct personal. The sender can put forth many different messages from pain and anger to joy and content.

Effective and Positive Demonstrative Communication

Demonstrative communication can be very useful in getting a message from the sender to the receiver successfully and effectively. It is used to reinforce verbal communication yet stands alone in conveying its own message. When the message is effective it will facilitate a respectful and positive connection. This form of communication can be both effective and positive if executed properly, there are many ways to do so by using one or a combination of several devices of the demonstrative communication. When you meet someone for an interview one of the first things that you meet them with is your eyes, this initial contact is executed when there is eye to eye contact. You can also combine that with a strong handshake and a pleasant smile. You may even want to lean towards the interviewer. These devices above show confidence to the interviewer and will leave a lasting first impression. This will help the interviewer also gauge you with other applicants. All these are great forms of nonverbal communication prior to the actual verbal communication.

Ineffective and Negative Demonstrative Communication

Everyday people use nonverbal communication and don’t even realize that they are doing so. It can come from anything like the way that you are dressed, the way that you are walking, to the way that you wear your hair. Although all these can relay positive nonverbal communications, many times it can also lead to unwanted negative nonverbal communication. Depending on whom you are approaching or who you come into contact with unexpectedly it can be evasive and misjudged. Someone can easily misinterpret the form of communication you may have without you even knowing that it is a negative message that you are sending forward. For example, a person is questioned about an incident at the workplace. They are then asked if they had seen anything, once there is a loss of eye contact that then gives the person conducting the questioning reason to believe that something may be wrong. Avoiding eye contact is one of the most clear negative nonverbal communication examples. It typically implies that the person may be lying, or fears confrontation (Buzzle.com , 2012).
