Death Penalty
Even though over 135 countries around the world have outlawed the death penalty, and there is barely any evidence to support its use, the United States remains as one of the few major industrialized nations that still executes prisoners. I personally think it should be abolished for many reasons. First of all, it costs way more to execute some one than to in prison them for life. Studies show that death penalty cases cost about $4 billion more than cases involving life sentences without possibility of parole. It is a huge waste of taxpayer funds and has no public safety benefit. Some states Currently spend about $180 million on the death penalty and is predicted to spend over $1 billion in the next five years.
Approximately 150 people are sentenced to death out of the 22,000 homicides committed each year. The death penalty is basically a “lethal lottery”. The race of the murderer and the victim were a huge part of who would receive the death penalty in this country. A report from 1990 showed that 82 percent of the trials, race of the victim was found to influence the chance of being charged with capital murder or getting the death penalty. Another major factor in determining if someone is sentenced to death is the quality of legal counsel and the jurisdiction where a crime is committed. Which shows that its not a full proof system.
Innocent people have been convicted and executed too many times. Ever since the reinstatement of the death penalty, 140 men and women have been released from Death Row, some within seconds of being put to death. . Studies show that in the past
