Death Penalty Death penalty or Capital Punishment is a legal process where the person who had committed the heinous crime of murder is sentenced to death by the state, as a means of punishment for what they’ve done. In ancient times most countries uses this method not only for a means of punishment for murder, but as a general punishment for anyone who had committed any type of crime. At that time the people who use this method the most are those who practices religion, although it isn’t justified to use that method today, back then it was the only method they can think of to get rid of the problem. As we approach the Middle Ages, their method of punishment changes, although it is still mostly based on religious punishment; such as, the witch burning on the stake, even though the person might have been innocent and not a witch. This shows how much they rely on religion judgment, making their judicial system very much flawed. The area that has improved compared to the ancient times, is the part where they do not use death penalty as a general punishment, but as a punishment for more terrible crimes; like as, murder, “witch craft,” treason, etc. By the modern era, 18th-19th century capital punishment is not as widely used as the previous Era, they have also moved the execution to a more discrete area, away from the public’s eyes, although by the 20th Century the use of death penalty had gone up to the highest in the human history, mostly due to the wars like World War I where a lot of people who were accused of treason were sentenced to death. That however does not compare to the people who were sentenced to death on World War II; sentencing millions of people, mainly Jews, to death by Adolf Hitler. Although most people today would not recognized that as a capital punishment, but as a murder. Today capital punishment is not as widely used unlike the previews era, like in the United States, this method of punishment is not used as much anymore, some states has declared this method of punishment unconstitutional, although it is still being used, it is in the process of being abolished. The abolishment of death penalty in the states are being pushed, because of the people who believes that this method is either inhumane, or ineffective; as the person being punish might see this as a way of escape from what they have done. However there are those who believe this system works; as it removes those who threaten our society/ our way of life, by giving them the punishment of death, the same thing of what they have done (murder), since execution is actually the process of killing some-one. The moral ethics that surrounds the death penalty is ambiguous at times, because it is unclear whether the person who had convicted the crime really deserves the punishment; because of this punishment some innocent people get sentence to death, and later finding out that that person was not the one who committed that crime. There are also times when that person who had killed someone may not mean to do it; such as car accident due to faulty driving, or another reasons other than a thought out plan of murder, sending them to death would be unethical. Although it can be a right thing to do at times, as the person who committed that crime does not receive the death penalty, might escape and commit more homicidal murder. There are no right ways to really justify whether this method of punishment is ethical or unethical. It all comes down to a person’s point of view, whether capital punishment/ death penalty is moral thing to do or if it is an immoral thing to do, in addition, what is the ethics that comes with those decisions, as well as, the pros and cons that comes with it. The benefits of death penalty is that the person who had committed the crime can be removed from society, since he/she had threatened the way of life of other citizens, by committing murder or homicide.
