During the New Age of Imperialism (1800-1914) European influence in Africa and Asia led to numerous changes throughout the world. The Scramble for Africa during this time both negatively and positively impacted regions involved in imperialism. The New Age of Imperialism impacted regions throughout both Africa and Europe. As a result of the actions taken by both areas during this time an increased sense of nationalism eventually occurred in African and Asian countries, Europe benefited off its new colonies, and African culture was destroyed by Westernization.
Oppressed countries in Africa and Asia soon gained Nationalism as a result of harsh working conditions and destruction of their cultures by European countries. As colonized countries became more and more oppressed with people’s jobs and safety they took a stand for themselves. People began to take a stand once they realized the differences from their country to their mother country did not work in their favor (Doc.8). In Document 8 with military officers and government officials jobs in danger from increased colonization they encouraged their people to fight for their country and take a stand for themselves. With new rule from imperialism officials jobs came greatly in to question so they turned to Nationalism to help prevent changes from occurring. During World War I Nationalism increased around the globe and countries under Imperial rule such as India began to see that they do not need the West to be involved in their Eastern affairs as seen in Document 7. In years to come people in India such as Gandhi stood up for their country in hopes to gain independence from England. Additionally, when the mother country became greedy and kept taking people made a stand for themselves. The following is seen in document 7 when the British advanced into Cape Colony indigenous tribes fought against the clearly superior British Army in order to take a stand even though coming up unsuccessful. The overall impact of New Imperialism led to African and Asian countries having a surge of Nationalism.
Although through harsh tactics and the destruction of cultures European countries were able to expand their world markets and gain new goods to sell from New Imperialism. During this time Africans were uneducated and unaware of the Europeans goals making it easy for European countries to benefit off them (Doc. 5). In order to gain an upper hand Europe used fear and lack of African intelligence to benefit off Africa. Europeans were easily capable of taking anything to better their economy because of the fear they installed in Africans through superior technology. The Europeans in some areas extracted goods from African farms such as guinea, corn and millet, groundnuts (Doc. 5). Document 4 describes the benefits that Holland has received from Java told by a colonial official. It would be typical for a colonial official to support and state that the mother country is benefiting from the productions of goods in the colony. Holland was capable of selling an immense amount of Javanese goods in Holland with huge amounts of profit, while giving the Javanese just enough not to starve (Doc. 4). An additional document that could have been included would be a primary account of a King of a European country participating in imperialism during this time period. The benefits that European countries received through increasing their market production and improving their economy was impacted from New Imperialism.
From Westernization and the demand and withdrawal of goods in Africa African culture was destroyed. In Rudyard Kipling’s “The White Man’s Burden” he justifies the New Age of Imperialism by while benefiting from their goods they are holding the responsibility to Westernize the indigenous people and
